TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Nick Kyrgios meets Gianluca Mager in the Round of 64 on Thursday, July 1st 2021.
Will Gianluca Mager be able to cause the big upset and get himself further than most expected him to at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships? Will Nick Kyrgios back up that incredible win after not having played for 4 months? Both players will know they have a good chance of winning this match if they’re at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Who will it be?
Gianluca Mager came through a hard fought 4-set match against Juan Ignacio Londero, beating the Argentine 7-6/6-0/4-6/6-3. It was looking like it could potentially be a 5-setter once Londero won the 3rd set, but Mager used all of his experience to ensure he got on top of rallies early and did not let it go on too long. Now, Gianluca will be very happy with his game but he knows that he is going to have to raise his level drastically if he is to get the upset over Nick Kyrgios under his belt here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Nick Kyrgios put on a superb performance in the Round of 128, beating the very in form Ugo Humbert in 5 sets 6-4/4-6/3-6/6-1/9-7. This match was played across 2 days and it was so fun to watch from start to finish. When they returned on Wednesday to finish the match, it looked as if Ugo was playing better and Nick was a bit stiff, especially on serve. However, once Nick found his groove, there was no stopping him, and he used all of the momentum the crowd was giving him to get the victory under his belt. Nick Kyrgios will want to go far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, but he needs to prevent Gianluca Mager from causing the upset.
Nick Kyrgios and Gianluca Mager have never met before, with this being their first meeting. Although they are similarly ranked, with Nick being 60th in the world and Gianluca 77th, there is no comparison between these two players. Gianluca is good, but good mainly in Challenger Tour and ATP 250 tournaments. Nick is world class on his day and he can beat anyone and everyone. I expect for Nick to come out here, put on another great performance, but this time he will not let it go to 5 sets so he can recover for further matches here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
