TennisSection previews the 2021 Queen’s Open as Matteo Berrettini (1) meets Dan Evans (6) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday June 18th, 2021.
Can the sixth seeded Brit Dan Evans cause the massive upset here over top seed Matteo Berrettini? Evans is seeking his first grass court Semi-Final on this level and has been in great form so far here at the 2021 Queen’s Open. Does he have enough to stop the world number nine? Or will Berrettini power his way to victory as expected and get the win here?
Matteo Berrettini is the top seed here at the 2021 Queen’s Open and is ranked #9 on the ATP Tour. The powerful Italian has been having an outstanding season so far this year and has continued that momentum here at Queen’s. He dominated local hero Andy Murray 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16 to set up a clash with Dan Evans here in the Quarter-Finals, and he will be the heavy favorite to win here. Berrettini has a huge serve and powerful groundstrokes, so once he is able to keep his error count low he should be able to dictate the match from the baseline. Evans is a tricky opponent and his slice will surely be very effective on this surface, so the Italian will have to be very focused here and try to remain as consistent as possible.
Dan Evans is the current British #1 and ranked number 25 in the ATP world rankings. He has been having a very solid season so far in 2021, winning his first ATP title at the Murray River Open and had a surprising run to the Semis at the Monte-Carlo Masters event on clay. He started his campaign strongly at the 2021 Queen’s Open, defeating formidable opponents Alexei Popyrin and Adrian Mannarino in straight sets to advance to the Quarter-Finals here. While he enters this match against Matteo Berrettini as the big underdog, he should not be discounted as it is very likely that the Italian star will have some serious issues with Evan’s backhand slice. The Brit doesn’t have the firepower to be able to bother his opponent on this surface, so he will have to play some tactically intelligent tennis to have any chance here.
Somewhat surprisingly, this will be the first match between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it certainly will be an interesting one to watch. They have very contrasting styles, and may be closer than many expect. Dan Evans is a very difficult player to face with a very unconventional style where he uses his backhand slice to great effect. Despite this, I do think that top seed Matteo Berrettini will eventually win this match, but it won’t be easy. The Italian has way too much firepower on this fast surface for Evans to handle, and while I do think that the Brit will force Berrettini into many errors, he should still escape with the win here, advancing to the Semi-Finals at the 2021 Queen’s Open.
