TennisSection previews the 2021 Stuttgart Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime (3) meets Marin Cilic in the Final on Sunday, June 13th 2021.
Will Marin Cilic win his 19th career title as he looks to show everyone how good he really is on grass before the bigger tournaments begin next week and in June? Will Felix Auger-Aliassiime finally get his 1st career title under his belt at the 8th time of asking? Both players can win this match if they are their best, but only one will walk out as the 2021 Stuttgart Open Champion. Who will it be?
Marin Cilic did not have to finish his match against Jurij Rodionov in the Semi-finals as Rodionov retired early in the second set with an injury when down 6-3/1-0. Marin showed great composure on his serve throughout the match, and he used all of his experience to get the lead here. Marin is definitely finding his form, and it is great to see because when he is at his best, the 2014 US Open Champion can beat anyone and everyone if he wants to. However, that was a long time ago, and he will now have to have a tough battle against the in-form youngster aiming for his 1st title in Felix Auger-Aliassime. Can he stop him?
Felix Auger-Aliassime put on a very solid performance in the Semi-finals here at the 2021 Stuttgart Open, beating the experienced Sam Querrey in straight sets 6-4/7-5. This match was very important for Felix I believe as it allowed him to get a big win under an experienced opponent who heavily relies on his big serve and forehand. Felix will use the momentum and experience of this win to make his game plan as he now meets Marin Cilic. Felix has always struggled at the last hurdle when he made it to Finals, losing 7 out of 7 finals. But if he can play as he did against Querrey, he will have a strong chance against Marin.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Marin Cilic have met 2 times before, with Marin Cilic leading the head to head 2-0. They last met towards the end of 2020 where Marin won in 3 sets 6-0/3-6/6-3. This match was very tight even through the scoreline says otherwise. I think that because Felix has been in strong form on clay both in 2019 and now in 2021, I believe he will know what he needs to do. Felix was able to use his power and speed around the court to move the big hitter in Querrey, and he will do the same against Marin who has not had the toughest competition (playing a below-part Shapovalov along the way) throughout the competition. Felix finally gets his first title on his 8th Final.
