TennisSection previews the 2021 Stuttgart Open as Sam Querrey meets Dominic Stricker (WC) in the Quarter-finals on Friday, June 11th 2021.
Will the wildcard, Dominic Stricker, continue to impress everyone in these small ATP 250 tournaments as he continues to make a name for himself? Will Sam Querrey use all of his experience to get the win here and dominate through his huge serve and forehand? Both players have played well all week, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals here at the 2021 Stuttgart Open. Who will it be?
Dominic Stricker is not very known on the ATP Tour, however, the young Swiss has been making waves in these smaller ATP 250 tournaments recently. Dominic Stricker beat one of the best players on fast surfaces in 2021, Hubert Hurkacz, in the second round, beating him in straight sets 7-6/7-6. Dominic has now beaten a fair few big names such as Marin Cilic, Marton Fucsovics, and Radu Albot over the last month or so, and I am sure that if he continues to play with this determination and power behind his shots, he can definitely beat some more big names. However, as we are now on the grass courts of Stuttgart, he will have to keep up with the big serving of Sam Querrey, can he cause another upset?
Sam Querrey has been in strong form this week, beating Altug Celikbilek in the first round in straight sets and James Duckworth in the second round as well 6-4/7-6. Sam Querrey is a very experienced player, but he has not had a lot of success recently, mainly due to his game not being really suited for clay courts. Here on grass, Querrey is able to get his game plan into play through his big serve and +1 shot with his huge forehand. Sam Querrey, however, will have to be at a very high level because he is going to meet a very in form Dominic Stricker who has nothing to lose here.
Sam Querrey and Dominic Stricker have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. They are polar opposites, with Querrey having 15 years of experience more and being ranked more than 250 places higher than him. However, looking at their performance this year on the ATP Tour, they both have won 4 matches, with Stricker only having lost 1 whilst Querrey has lost 5. This indicates that this is going to be a very tight encounter as Dominic has nothing to lose here at the 2021 Stuttgart Open and he is just going to swing for the fences. Sam Querrey should still come out on top of this match due to his experience and the fact that he likes playing on grass, but I expect for it to be 3 sets.
