TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Serena Williams (7) meets Elena Rybakina (21) in the Round of 16 on Sunday June 6th, 2021.
Serena Williams is here at the 2021 French Open in search of a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title. The American superstar has been impressive so far, reaching the Round of 16 without too many issues. She now faces her toughest opponent yet in Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, can she get another win to advance to the Quarter-Finals here at Roland Garros 2021?
Serena Williams is a living tennis legend, and is widely considered as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Now approaching the end of her career, she is seeking to equal Margaret Court’s Grand Slam singles record with a win here. She has been in impressive form so far here at the 2021 French Open, most notably defeating fellow American Danielle Collins 6-4, 6-4 in the Third Round to reach this stage. Williams has been at her best, displaying her trademark dominant groundstrokes, and overpowering her opponents from the baseline. While Serena is not the player that she once was, there is no denying her fighting spirit and she seems fully locked in here at Roland Garros 2021. In this type of form she will be very difficult to stop, and enters this match against Elena Rybakina as the favorite.
Elena Rybakina is currently ranked #22 in the WTA world rankings, and is the #21 seed here at the 2021 French Open. The Kazakh has had a very disappointing season so far, after a career best year in 2021. She has been in dominant form so far here at Roland Garros, only dropping a mere 14 games over her first three matches here. She overpowered Elena Vesnina in the Third Round, serving 12 aces and hitting a whopping 26 winners in a straight sets victory. She has seemingly hit form at the right time, but will now be severely tested as she will face possibly the greatest female player of all time in Serena Williams. While the American enters as the favorite, Rybakina is fully capable of causing the upset here if Serena is not at her best.
This will be the first meeting between Serena Williams and Elena Rybakina on the WTA Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. The outcome of this match is completely dependent on the American, as she is the better player but has been unpredictable over the past few seasons. When she is in form and fully fit she should have no problems overpowering her opponent, but has struggled to make it deep into tournaments recently and the Kazakh is sure to ask some serious questions. I expect Serena to answer those questions and coming away with a tough straight sets win, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 French Open.
