TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Petra Kvitova takes on Maria Sakkari in the Round of 32 on Saturday, September 4th, 2021.
Will Petra Kvitova go through? Will Maria Sakkari pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two players who are very close in level and high in ranking going head to head. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open?
Petra Kvitova has been playing great tennis to set up this early high status meeting against Maria Sakkari. Both players have been playing great this tournament, and it will definitely be a close one. It’s a pretty interesting match-up, with Kvitova hitting pretty big and deep groundstrokes from the back of the court, and of course being a lefty will play a factor here. She has a pretty good serve, standing at 6’0, so it’ll definitely be worth the watch to see how she handles herself off that end, dealing with someone who returns pretty well. She is the slight favorite to go through, and I think if she serves well and plays a little aggressive, especially in certain moments, she will probably go through to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Open.
Maria Sakkari has been playing pretty well, and she has a tough one ahead of her in Petra Kvitova. It’s quite a diverse matchup, and Sakkari has a good shot to pull off the slight upset here. Due to her recent form in tournaments leading up to this one, I feel like she’s going to have more confidence that she can do it, these two have met several times before, and the encounters were almost always quite close. So it will definitely be interesting to see if Sakkari can get over the line and use her consistent, heavy hitting to take out Kvitova and head through to the fourth round at the 2021 US Open.
Petra Kvitova and Maria Sakkari have met five times before, with Petra Kvitova leading the head to head 3-2. Their last four meetings have all gone three sets, and I suspect it will go the distance once again here in New York. This time, though, as opposed to their last two encounters, I think Sakkari will get the win. I feel like she’s been playing at a higher level for a lot of the year, particularly after the clay season. Their most recent meeting was in Stuggart, on a grass court where we know Kvitova is very well versed and Sakkari is on the opposite end of the spectrum in that department, and the match still went three sets. Just due to the recent form, I think she’ll get the win in a tight contest, Sakkari will probably try to simply run Kvitova around the court, she’s tall and doesn’t particularly like when players do that to her, as movement is probably one of the worse assets of her game, so I do think if she can do that successfully, that she’ll clinch the win and progress here at the 2021 US Open.
