TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Hubert Hurkacz (13) meets Dan Evans in the Second Round on Wednesday April 14th, 2021.
This is set to be a very interesting match between thirteenth seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland and Great Britain’s Dan Evans. Both players have been in good form lately with Hurkacz coming off a win at the Miami Open and Evans being outstanding in his opening round here. Will it be Hurkacz continuing his championship winning form? Or can the British #1 take advantage of his opponent’s possible fatigue and cause the upset here?
Hubert Hurkacz is currently ranked a career-high #16 in the ATP world rankings and his confidence is sky-high. He enters this event after winning the Miami Open, his first Masters-1000 title. The Pole displayed tennis in Miami, defeating five higher-ranked players en route to the title. Despite his momentum heading into this event, he didn’t look comfortable in his opening round win over Thomas Fabbiano, needing to come from behind to defeat his opponent who was ranked over 150 spots behind him. A shaky performance was to be expected since it was his first match on clay for the season, but he will have to be much better against the experienced Dan Evans. Evans was very impressive in his opening round here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters and is definitely capable of springing an upset here.
Dan Evans is currently Britain’s #1, and is ranked #33 in the ATP world rankings. While he has been having a great year in 2021, his clay court record is dismal at best. Before this event, he last won a main draw match at a clay court tournament way back in 2017 so he will be relieved to have broken that streak. He defeated former Monte-Carlo Masters Finalist Dusan Lajovic in a hard-fought three set First Round match. It is surprising that he struggles so much on clay, as he is a very intelligent player that has some nice variation to his game. While he is the underdog heading into this match, he is facing an opponent in Hubert Hurkacz who is also not comfortable on this surface and will be backing himself here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
This will be the second time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, and Hubert Hurkacz leads the head to head 1-0. He won the only time they played last year on clay at the Rome Masters, winning in three tight sets. Even though Hurkacz hasn’t been at his best so far here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Open, I am still backing him to get the win here. Luckily for him, he is facing an opponent that dislikes clay as much as he does, and while Dan Evans was impressive in the First Round, I see him falling short here. The Polish #1 simply has too much firepower for Evans to handle at the moment, and with his confidence at an all-time high I struggle to see Evans winning here. Hubert Hurkacz will win and advance to the Round of 16 here in Monaco.
