TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Novak Djokovic (1) meets Ricardas Berankis in the Round of 32 on Saturday, June 5th 2021.
Will Ricardas Berankis be able to shock everyone here at Roland Garros by beating the World No.1? Will Novak Djokovic continue to cruise through his matches here in Paris as he looks to continue building momentum in his game as he looks to be ready to fight for the title? Novak will want to get this match done easily, but can he prevent an upset here?
Ricardas Berankis has played well here at Roland Garros this week, beating the heavy favourite in his opening match Ugo Humbert, and now beating James Duckworth in the Round of 64 in 4 sets 7-5/2-6/7-6/6-0. Ricardas Berankis is a very experienced player on the ATP Tour, with over 14 years of experience, and I am sure he will come out here not scared to give it his best as he has done all week at the 2021 French Open. However, he now meets Novak Djokovic, and even at your best it is most likely not enough when it comes to beating the World No.1. Can Ricardas shock us all here in Paris and get the biggest win of his career under his belt?
Novak Djokovic cruised through his Round of 64 match, beating the flamboyant Pablo Cuevas in straight sets 6-3/6-2/6-4. Novak has been on a roll on clay recently, making the Final of Rome (losing to Nadal), winning the title in his home tournament in Belgrade, and now having won his opening two matches without losing a set. Novak seems to be very determined to get the Roland Garros title this year, and he knows that anything less than his best tennis will not be good enough as Rafael Nadal runs these courts, and has done 13 times over the last 16 years. Novak will be determined, and he will not want to give someone like Ricardas Berankis a chance here.
Novak Djokovic and Ricardas Berankis have met 3 times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 3-0. They met last year here at the French Open, and Novak won in 3 very easy sets 6-1/6-2/6-2. Unfortunately for Berankis, I don’t see anything changing this year. Novak is improving with every match he plays, and he will come out here ready to get off the court quickly to save energy for more important matches. Berankis does not have the power, the accuracy, nor the stamina to keep up with Novak, and this match will be over in 3 sets. Novak will make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 French Open easily.
