Roland Garros 2021: Diego Schwartzman vs. Aljaz Bedene Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Diego Schwartzman (10) meets Aljaz Bedene in the Round of 64 on Thursday, June 3rd 2021.

Will Aljaz Bedene get a Top 10 win under his belt in one of the biggest tournaments in the world to make a bigger name for himself? Will Diego Schwartzman build on his very strong opening round performance as he looks to find his feet again after a lack of consistency all season? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 here at Roland Garros. Who will it be?

Aljaz Bedene thought through a very tight Round of 128 match against Adrian Mannarino, beating the experienced Frenchman in 4 sets 7-5/3-6/7-5/6-2. Aljaz Bedene is very underrated I believe, with not many people knowing how consistent he is in smaller tournaments such as ATP 250s. Aljaz is always in the mix in those tournaments, more likely than not making the Quarter-finals. Aljaz will want to get his name out there more and show everyone that he should not be underestimated, but he needs to be at his best as he is meeting a determined Diego Schwartzman here at the 2021 French Open.

Diego Schwartzman cruised through his opening match here, beating the very experienced Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets 6-2/6-2/6-3. Diego Schwartzman has been struggling with form all year, having only one week (at the Argentina Open) where he was at his best. Here at Roland Garros, where he made the Semi-finals last year, Diego will want to keep the momentum gained from his first win going to ensure he has come confidence to turn his lacklustre season around. However, Diego Schwartzman’s serve needs to be at its best on Thursday as he meets the always tough to play Aljaz Bedene.

Diego Schwartzman and Aljaz Bedene have met 5 times before, with Aljaz Bedene leading the head to head 4-1. The last time they met was at the Argentina Open in 2019 where Diego won in 3 sets. However, before that, Diego had never won against Aljaz. I think this is going to be an extremely tight match here between two players looking to improve their season. Diego is of course the better player on his best day, but with their prior encounters, I see him not having as much confidence here. I still see Diego coming out on top and making his way to the Round of 32 here at Roland Garros, but he will win this match in 5 sets.
