Both men played some outstanding tennis in their respective First Round victories, and are seemingly in good form. Can the Qualifier stun the reliable Bautista-Agut? Or will the Spaniard advance to the Third Round at Roland Garros 2021 as expected?
Roberto Bautista Agut is currently ranked #11 in the ATP world rankings and is also the eleventh seed here at the 2021 French Open. The Spaniard is known as one of the most consistent players on tour, and is a very difficult opponent regardless of the surface. While he considers hard court his preferred surface, he has had some strong performances on clay throughout his career, though he has never passed the Fourth Round here at Roland Garros. He was clinical in his opening round win over Mario Vilella Martinez, winning in straight sets with his trademark aggressive baseline game. He enters this match against Henri Laaksonen as the massive favorite, and should be backed to advance to the Third Round here at Roland Garros 2021.
Henri Laaksonen is currently ranked #150 in the ATP world rankings and entered the 2021 French Open by coming through the Qualifying Rounds. The Swiss player defeated world number #93 Yannick Hanfmann in the First Round in four sets, playing impressive tennis throughout. Laaksonen hit a whopping 10 aces and 38 winners, while committing only 23 unforced errors. Despite his solid win, he will enter this match against Roberto Bautista Agut as the heavy underdog here at Roland Garros 2021, and will have to be much better to make this match interesting. The Spaniard is one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour and very rarely gives points away. Players usually have to hit through him to beat him, something that Laaksonen is unlikely to be capable of doing for an entire match.
This is the second time that the two players will face each other on the ATP Tour, with Roberto Bautista Agut leading the head to head series 1-0. They played each other all the way back in 2013, with the Spaniard winning in straight sets on clay at Gstaad. I expect this match to have a similar result here at the 2021 French Open, with Bautista Agut winning in convincing fashion. Henri Laaksonen is nowhere near the level required to defeat the Spaniard here, and I see him exiting Roland Garros 2021 in straight sets.
