TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Roger Federer (8) meets Denis Istomin (Q) in the Round of 128 on Monday, May 31st 2021.
Will the qualifier, Denis Istomin, be able to shock us all and beat one of the best players of all time in the Round of 128 at the 2021 French Open? Will Roger Federer be able to show us all that he is back and that he is ready to give it his best at Roland Garros where he won one of the most important Grand Slams of his career in 2009? This match will be important to see where Federer’s level is at, and I am sure everyone is excited to see him back playing at a Grand Slam. Will he come out strongly?
Denis Istomin performed strongly during the qualifying matches, beating the likes of Damir Dzumhur and Ramkumar Ramanathan along the way to secure his spot in the main draw of Roland Garros 2021. However, Denis Istomin is still nowhere near the level he would need to be at for his unlucky first round draw. Istomin has been drawn against one of the best players of all time in Roger Federer right from the start, and I am sure he will come out here very nervous in aiming to beat him. Denis Istomin will have to ensure he is at his absolute best if he wants to beat one of the Big 3 at Roland Garros in a Best of 5 sets match.
Roger Federer will be looking to get some solid wins under his belt here at the 2021 French Open as he is playing his second match on clay in nearly 2 years. Roger Federer last played on clay a few weeks ago at the Geneva Open where he lost in 3 sets in his only match against Pablo Andujar. Roger has said prior to the Roland Garros 2021 that we should not expect him to make it far or win the tournament this year, and that his focus is really on Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics. However, Federer has been preparing for Roland Garros in style, playing with the likes of Gael Monfils and Aslan Karatsev. Roger is never to be underestimated, even at his weakest moments. Will he cruise through the first challenge in Denis Istomin?
Roger Federer and Denis Istomin have never 7 before, with Roger Federer leading the head to head 7-0. Although Denis Istomin is experienced and has put on some solid performances in the qualifying rounds, I don’t see him getting anything going against a determined Roger Federer. Roger will still want to win 2 or 3 matches here at the 2021 French Open even though he has no expectations of positive performances, and I am sure he will come out here ready to win fast and save his energy for any potential matches further into the tournament. Roger Federer will win in straight sets and make his way to the Round of 64 of Roland Garros.
