TennisSection previews the 2021 Geneva Open as Denis Shapovalov (2) meets Pablo Cuevas in the Semi-Finals on Friday May 21st, 2021.
An exciting match is expected here at the 2021 Geneva Open as young star Denis Shapovalov will face the veteran Pablo Cuevas in the Semi-Finals. Both men have played some fantastic tennis to reach this stage, and will be seeking to reach their first Final of the season. Who will get the win here?
Denis Shapovalov of Canada is currently ranked #15 in the ATP world rankings, and is the second seed here at the 2021 Geneva Open. The young Canadian has established himself as a rising star, and has matured greatly as a player in the past few years. He had been having a disappointing start to his clay court season, but a Round of 16 appearance in Rome followed by this run has given him some hope. After a tough win over Marco Cecchinato to start this event, he defeated Laslo Djere 6-4, 6-4 in the Quarter-Finals, an assured performance which will give him confidence heading into the Semis. He enters this match against Pablo Cuevas as the favorite, but would be wise to not underestimate his veteran opponent, who is still capable of some great tennis at times.
Pablo Cuevas is unseeded here at the 2021 Geneva Open and is contesting his first Semi-Final of the year. Once ranked as high as #19, he currently finds himself languishing at #102 in the ATP world rankings, and has suffered a sharp decline in form and ranking over the past few years. After having to come through the Qualifying Rounds here in Geneva, he has been outstanding, particularly with his wins over Reilly Opelka and world #20 Grigor Dimitrov in the Quarter-Finals. While he enters this match as the underdog, he has vast experience, and still has the game to trouble his opponent Denis Shapovalov here, and should not be overlooked.
This will be the second career meeting between the two players, with Pablo Cuevas leading the head to head series 1-0. The pair last played in 2018 in Indian Wells, with the Uruguayan winning in straight sets. However, that was when he was at his peak, and Denis Shapovalov was just arriving on the scene, so not much stock should be placed into that result. This match is sure to be exciting, with both men being very flashy shot makers. Despite Cuevas’ form, I expect the Canadian star to get a tough win here. He simply has too much firepower for his veteran opponent, and while it won’t be easy, he should advance to his first Final of 2021. Denis Shapovalov will win in two tight sets, advancing to the Final here at the 2021 Geneva Open.
