TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Andrey Rublev (7) meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the Second Round on Wednesday May 12th, 2021.
An entertaining match is expected here in the Second Round of the 2021 Rome Open. Seventh seeded Andrey Rublev has been one of the leading players in the world this year; can he keep his momentum going with yet another deep run here in Rome? Or will Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany be able to shrug off his poor season so far by causing a massive upset?
Andrey Rublev is currently ranked a career-high #7 in the ATP world rankings, and is the seventh seed here at the 2021 Rome Open. The Russian has quickly developed into a star over the past couple years, and has firmly established himself as one of the very best players in the world. He has had an outstanding year so far, and began the clay court season with the same success that he has become accustomed to. Rublev stunned Rafael Nadal en route to the Monte-Carlo Final. Surprisingly, he then lost to John Isner in the Round of 16 and will be looking to get his season back on track here in Rome. The Russian enters this match against Jan-Lennard Struff as the overwhelming favorite, it and will be a shock to see anything other than a straight-sets win here.
Jan-Lennard Struff is unseeded here at the 2021 Rome Open, and is ranked #41 in the ATP world rankings. A very talented player with big weapons in his serve and groundstrokes, the German has seen his ranking slide from the 20’s to where it is now with a string of poor results lately. A poor start to the season was followed by a surprising run to the Final in Munich, before First Round exits in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. Struff will be desperate to break the losing streak here in Rome, however he is up against one of the best players in the world in Andrey Rublev, and it is unlikely he will be able to get anything out of this match.
This will be the third time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, with the head to head tied at 1-1. There isn’t much to write about this match other than to expect a straight-sets win for Russian star, Andrey Rublev. He has been in sublime form so far in 2021, and while Jan-Lennard Struff is a fantastic player, he is simply too inconsistent to be a factor here. Rublev has just been steamrolling his opposition this year and I expect it to be no different here. Andrey Rublev will win here and advance to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Rome Open.
