TennisSection previews the 2021 Madrid Open as Dominic Thiem (3) meets John Isner in the Quarter-finals on Friday, May 7th, 2021.
Will Dominic Thiem continue to make improvements in his game in only his 3rd match back in 2 months? Will John Isner continue to put on extremely solid performances here at the 2021 Madrid Open as he looks to make the late stages the tournament at the age of 36 after having struggled with form over the last year? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals. Who will it be?
John Isner put on an amazing serving performance in the Round of 16, beating his 5th Top 10 player on a clay court in Andrey Rublev in 3 tight sets 7-6/3-6/7-6. Andrey Rublev was giving it his all against John, but the American was able to win the most important points in the very tight moments. John Isner is able to really give it his all in his return games as he is extremely confident in his ability to win his own service games with one of the best serves in the history of the game. However, John should definitely make sure he is still at his best as he now meets another Top 10 player in Dominic Thiem who loves playing on clay.
Dominic Thiem put on a very solid performance in only his second match back in 2 months, beating the in form Alex de Minaur in straight sets 7-6(7)/6-4. Dominic Thiem went behind a break early on in both sets, and he was able to maintain his composure and fight back to win both. Thiem is still not where he wants to be in terms of his tennis, but he is definitely on the right track with those two solid victories under his belt. Dominic always gives it 110% in a match, but he will need to find the line between trying to outpower his opponent, and find his bearings around the court against a player who’s serve is near impossible to return as he is probably the best server in history, John Isner.
Dominic Thiem and John Isner have met 3 times before, with Dominic Thiem leading the head to head 2-1. Although Dominic Thiem leads the head to head, their last meeting was extremely tight in 2017, and John Isner has been in incredible form this week. Dominic Thiem is still not where he needs to be in terms of his tennis level, and he will need some more matches under his belt to be fully confident in every shot that he takes. John Isner on the other hand has been immaculate on his serve, and I expect for him to prevent Thiem from really getting in the match.
