TennisSection previews the 2021 Estoril Open as Ugo Humbert (3) meets Marco Cecchinato in the Second Round on Wednesday, April 28th, 2021.
Will Marco Cecchinato come out here and put on another extremely solid performance at the 2021 Estoril Open as he looks to show us that he is still to be feared in these smaller ATP 250 clay-court tournaments? Will Ugo Humbert and continue to build on his strong CV in the tennis world at this level as he continues to win against some strong opponents? Both players will be very keen to make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Estoril Open, but only one will. Who will it be?
Marco Cecchinato showed us some life in his game for the first time in a long time, beating the in form Lloyd Harris in straight sets 6-3/6-4. Everyone remembers Marco Cecchinato from his incredible run to the Semi-finals of the 2018 French Open, but since then, he has underperformed on a very consistent basis. I don’t think this is due to his lack of talent or skill, but it is due to a lack of confidence. Marco Cecchinato is a very solid mover around clay and he has a very strong swing both on his forehand and backhand, and if he is able to get some more wins under his belt, I am sure his confidence will rise and he can re-establish himself as a mainstay in these ATP 250 tournaments. However, he will have to beat one of the best youngsters at the moment in Ugo Humbert.
Ugo Humbert has not really played much on the clay this year, only playing at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, and losing his match in straight sets to John Millman. Ugo Humbert is much more of a hard-court and indoor hard-court kind of player, and I wonder how much success he will actually have on clay as he is not really in his element when the game is slowed down. Ugo Humbert has a lot of talent, and a lot of promise, but he needs to ensure he can adapt to all surfaces, especially clay, unless he wants to end up losing in the early rounds to players who are ranked much lower than him, such as Marco Cecchinato.
Ugo Humbert and Marco Cecchinato have met 1 time before, with Ugo Humbert having won that encounter. They met last year at the Auckland Open where Humbert won in straight sets 6-1/6-4. That meeting was on a hard-court, however, we are on clay-courts here at the 2021 Estoril Open. I do expect a very tight match between both players as they can give it their all when they want to. However, I think that Ugo Humbert’s lack of play on clay and experience on the surface will put him in a bad place. Marco Cecchinato knows he can beat some of the best when he is at his best on this surface, and look for him to get some momentum going as he makes his way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Estoril Open.
