TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as David Goffin (11) meets Dan Evans in the Quarter-Finals on Friday April 16th, 2021.
A very surprising Quarter-Final match awaits us at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters event in Monaco. Eleventh seeded David Goffin of Belgium faces unseeded Dan Evans in a match that not many would have expected to see at this stage of the tournament. Both men have played very well so far and fully deserve to be here, who will win and advance to the Semi-Finals?
David Goffin is currently ranked #15 in the ATP world rankings and has been a staple of the top 20 for quite some time. Despite having a very inconsistent 2021 season so far, he has been outstanding so far here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, with his aggressive yet consistent brand of tennis being too much for his opponents to handle. After defeating Marin Cilic and Marco Cecchinato to reach the Round of 16, he put on a master-class to defeat 5th seeded Alexander Zverev in two tight sets, 6-4, 7-6. He will be very confident in advancing to the Semi-Finals here, as he has had a lot of success at this event throughout his career. His opponent Dan Evans has never been to this stage at a Masters-1000 event and is much lower ranked, so Goffin enters this match as the heavy favorite to advance here in Monaco.
Dan Evans is currently ranked #33 in the ATP world rankings, and is the British number one. Not much was expected of him heading into the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, as he had failed to win a main draw match on clay since 2017. He has proven the doubters wrong however, with a string of impressive wins, most notably over heavy favorite Novak Djokovic in the Round of 16. Evans shocked the tennis world by the manner in which he got the win, in a match that no one expected him to even come close to being competitive. With his solid baseline style and varied game, Evans is a handful for any opponent, and his confidence will be sky high after the biggest win of his career. Despite the victory over Djokovic, he enters this match as the underdog, against a very experienced opponent in David Goffin.
The two players have faced each other once before in their careers, with Dan Evans leading the head to head series 1-0. He defeated the Belgian last year at the ATP Cup, in straight sets. This has the potential to be a very close match between two very experienced players. While Goffin has the much better clay-court resume, Evans is seemingly in the form of his life on the surface, and will believe he can win here after the win over Djokovic. All things considered, I am going to give the slight edge to David Goffin. They are pretty evenly matched in terms of form here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, but Goffin has much more “big match” experience, and has been to the Semi-Finals here before. I expect this match to go the distance, with the Belgian winning the crucial points and advancing to the Semis here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
