TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Pablo Carreno Busta (12) meets Stefano Travaglia in the First Round on Tuesday, April 13th 2021.
Will Stefano Travaglia be able to cause the upset here in the First Round, beating a player who has had an amazing week of tennis just last week in Marbella? Will Pablo Carreno Busta continue to put on superb performances on the clay, looking to back up his title victory in Andalucia, Marbella, here as he starts his 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters campaign. This is going to be an interesting encounter in the First Round, but who will make their way to the Second Round?
Stefano Travaglia will be very happy to be back on the clay as he prefers these conditions more than hard-courts where he has lost in the first round of all of his last 4 tournaments. Travaglia started the year off strongly making the Quarter-finals of the Antalya Open and the Final of the Adelaide International, however, since then, he has just not found any rhythm until this week. Travaglia prefers clay and he was able to get two solid victories under his belt in the qualifying rounds to book himself a spot here in the First Round. However, Travaglia has now been put up against a very tough opponent in Pablo Carreno Busta who is having an amazing time on clay and who will be very determined to continue performing strongly here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Pablo Carreno Busta has been superb last week at the 2021 Andalucia Open, winning all 4 of his matches and lifting the title on Sunday after beating Jaume Munar in a very tight 3-set match 6-1/2-6/6-4. The fight shown by Pablo Carreno Busta in the third and final set in that match was what set him aside from Munar as he was able to just keep the ball back in play and get himself on top of most rallies. Carreno Busta is a very experienced player on the ATP Tour, having won 5 titles, and having also won near to 200 matches throughout his career. The Spaniard will be very determined to continue performing at this high level here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Open and best prepare himself for more big tournaments in this clay-court season.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Stefano Travaglia have met once before, with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head 1-0. They last met in the Round of 16 of the Meknes Open in Morocco where Pablo won in 3 sets 6-1/1-6/6-4. Back then, Pablo was nowhere near the level he currently is at, and Travaglia is only slightly better than he was. Stefano will have gotten used to the clay here and the conditions which might help him make this match a bit longer than it should be, but at the end of the day, I expect that Pablo Carreno Busta will keep this momentum going and book himself a spot in the Second Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
