There was a semblance of normalcy in how Samsonova managed to stave off Polina Kudermetova in the round of 16, blazing her serves and returns with precision and was aided by Kudermetova’s wobbly serves which generated a whipping 10 double faults. It was a complete contrast in performance to the one she served up in her opener against Papadakis which lasted 20 minutes shy of four hours. She will face Aliaksandra Sasnovich whom she beat comfortably in the Cleveland final last year. Sasnovich, ranked 71st, was pushed to three sets by Greet Minnen but survived. Samsonova tends to start slow in tournaments but quickly finds her rhythm mid-tournament. So it won’t be a surprise if she went all the way here in Rosmalen after escaping her marathon first-round match.
