Bernarda Pera and Lesia Tsurenko haven’t played each other on the WTA Tour, with this second-round match at the Italian Open being their first official meeting. Tsurenko picked up her first main draw win in six years at the WTA Rome event, beating her countrywoman Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3. It was a great performance from the 33-year-old who withstood a barrage of aggressive hitting from Svitolina who only just returned to action from maternity but played at a decent level. Fittingly for Tsurenko, she’s now won all first-round matches she has played in 2023 (10 tournaments so far). Pera is seeded 28th and got a bye in the first round, but she is a vastly top performer on clay and certainly on the courts in Rome where her topspin will be highly effective as compared to Madrid where she struggled at altitude.
