WTA Finals 2022: Ons Jabeur vs. Aryna Sabalenka Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 WTA Finals as Ons Jabeur takes on Aryna Sabalenka in the Round Robin stage on Monday, October 31st, 2022.

The WTA Finals will be played on US soil for the first time since 2005. Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur will look to stake her claim as a major candidate to win it all. The World No. 2 targets to put a capstone to her barnstorming year, but faces a stern test of her title credentials when she opens up against Aryna Sabalenka. Who will prevail?

Ons Jabeur has endured another year of close but no cigar. But it depends on how you look at it. The other side of the coin works just right. Jabeur has ascended to a career-high World No. 2, becoming the first player from the Arab world to do so. She would headline two of the four Grand Slam finals. And in the midst of that, secured the WTA 1000 title in Madrid and the Berlin crown on grass. The worrying thing for the Tunisian star coming to Fort Worth is that she has not played competitively since a shock quarterfinals defeat to Claire Liu in Monastir in early October. Will she be caught cold by power-hitting Aryna Sabalenka?

Aryna Sabalenka qualified for the WTA Finals by the skin of her teeth. A run to the semifinals of the US Open was pivotal in getting her spot at the elite eight in Fort Worth, Texas. Sabalenka has cut a frustration figure for much of 2022 as her biggest weapon – her serve – deteriorated. But the Belarusian star made up for her serving yips, often overpowering her opponents in a baseline battle. With just 30 wins in 2022, Sabalenka has put together the fewest wins among the WTA Finals field.

Aryna Sabalenka leads Ons Jabeur 2-1 in their head-to-head. The pair haven’t faced off since their Wimbledon quarterfinal showdown last year which Sabalenka won in straight sets. The odds are almost even here. Jabeur hasn’t played a lot of tennis lately and that is a crucial factor in this matchup. She is a momentum player and usually takes a while to get things going. Sabalenak’s troubles with her serve are well documented, but if the Belarusian can land her first delivery constantly, she has the natural power to blow away the Tunisian in a baseline duel.
