Vienna Open 2022: Daniil Medvedev vs. Dominic Thiem Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Vienna Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Dominic Thiem in the Round of 16 on Thursday, October 27th, 2022.

Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Dominic Thiem pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have an absolutely mouthwatering clash with two superstars of the game meeting once again for the first time since 2020. Who will triumph and move through to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Vienna Open?

Daniil Medvedev took down Basilashvili 6-2 6-2 in under an hour, a very routine win for him in which he looked to be in solid form. Medvedev has had a tough season, but he’s been playing great these last few weeks and he’s looking to close in some more points to confirm his qualification for the ATP Finals. As he comes up against Dominic Thiem, he knows that this will be a very tricky match for several reasons. Thiem has the game to beat Medvedev, but with some occasional inconsistencies on his serve, and obviously with his forehand still not up to it’s best quite yet, Medvedev will be able to jump on those things and fight off the home favorite to book his spot in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Vienna Open.

Dominic Thiem claimed an absolutely epic win over Tommy Paul in 3 hours of breathtaking tennis. Coming back from a set down, 2-5 down in the 3rd set, and 4-6 down in the 3rd set tiebreaker, Thiem’s fight was fully on display. As he comes up against Daniil Medvedev though, he’ll know himself that it’ll take a special rise in level from him if he wants a shot in this match. Thiem will have to serve at a very high percentage, and he needs to mix it up by coming to the net and playing dropshots, as with the state of his forehand, he won’t be doing all that much to the top seed from the line. Let’s see what these two stars can bring here at the 2022 Vienna Open.

Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem have met five times before, with Dominic Thiem leading the head to head 3-2. The pair hasn’t played in 2 years, with Thiem undergoing unfortunate events with injury, but now he’s back and he’s playing some incredible tennis, and he still has plenty of room to grow, which is scary. Daniil Medvedev though will be hungry to gather as many points as he can before Turin, and he is most definitely the best player in the draw, a tough break for the Austrian. I think Thiem has what it takes to spring a surprise, but ultimately, Medvedev will get a good win in a highly anticipated matchup to equal the head to head and book his place in the last eight of the 2022 Vienna Open.
