Tokyo Open 2022: Taylor Fritz vs. Frances Tiafoe Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Tokyo Open as Taylor Fritz takes on Frances Tiafoe in the final on Sunday, October 9th, 2022.

Will Taylor Fritz celebrate his place inside the world’s top 10 with a third title of 2022 at the Tokyo Open? Or will Frances Tiafoe turn the tables against his compatriot and lift his first title of his outstanding season? Something has to give on Sunday and here is our match preview of the Tokyo final which promises to be an intriguing affair.

Taylor Fritz eased his way into the Tokyo Open final after edging out Denis Shapovalov in three sets of their high-octane semifinal. Fritz, who is projected to enter the world’s top 10 on Monday for the first time in his career, fought back from a 3-1 deficit in the deciding set before prevailing 6-3 6-7 6-3, reeling off five straight games to seal the deal. The lanky American had lost four out of five meetings against Shapovalov and was the slight underdog heading into their semifinal on Saturday, partly due to his lack of match sharpness after quarantining for a week in Seoul for testing positive of Covid-19. He will now target to win his third title of the season when he faces countryman Frances Tiafoe.

Frances Tiafoe, meanwhile, came out on top of a topsy turvyencounter against Soonwoo Kwon. Tiafoe overcame a bagel set to defeat the South Korean 6-2 0-6 6-4 to reach his second ATP final of 2022. Tiafoe has been in scintillating form this fall, reaching the US Open semifinals for the first time in his career and playing an instrumental role in leading Team World to Laver Cup success in London. While his perfect set record at the Tokyo Open was shattered, he will be in fine spirits heading to the final match.

Taylor Fritz leads Frances Tiafoe 4-1 in their head-to-head. California’s Fritz has dispatched Tiafoe in their two meetings this year, both on hard courts including their second-round meeting in Montreal a few months ago. While the onus is on Fritz to extend his near-perfect record against Tiafoe, you simply cannot write off Tiafoe’s chances in this match. Fritz has looked shaky in each of his three completed matches this week, largely due to his absence in Seoul last week due to Covid-19. Tiafoe’scareer-best season surely deserves a capstone and title win at the Tokyo Open would be put the icing on the cake.
