Tokyo Open 2022: Nick Kyrgios vs. Taylor Fritz Tennis Pick and Prediction

Taylor Fritz got a tough win in a tough match, but he’s gone through nonetheless. After a really impressive season, he cooled down immensely at the US Open, despite an open draw failing to meet a single expectation others had for him during the tournament. His level seemed improved at the Laver Cup, and he’s looking like his old self once again, but Nick Kyrgios will be an uphill battle for sure. While I do like some parts of this matchup for Fritz, I don’t expect things to come easily for him here at the 2022 Tokyo Open.

Nick Kyrgios also needed 3 sets, but had a convincing first round win and dominantly put away the match after a rough opening set. While Taylor Fritz will be a really hard challenge, I think Kyrgios has a really good chance in this one. Kyrgios has been playing some great tennis consistently, but Fritz still has some gray areas in his game. While if both were at their best, I might take Fritz as I really love this matchup for him, I don’t think the best version of Fritz will show up and Kyrgios will take advantage to book himself a place in the semifinals of the 2022 Tokyo Open.

Taylor Fritz and Nick Kyrgios have met once before, with Taylor Fritz leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came in Cincinnati earlier this year, with Fritz crushing Kyrgios in a solid display of tennis. Kyrgios was very far from his best during that match, but the result still goes to show that Fritz’s big serving and his ability to deal with Nick’s flat groundstrokes help him out in this matchup. I still expect Kyrgios to bring a higher level of tennis than that of what we saw in Cincinnati though to take this contest and move on to the last four here at the 2022 Tokyo Open.
