TennisSection previews the 2022 Tokyo Open as Alex de Minaur takes on Soonwoo Kwon in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, October 4th, 2022.

Will Alex de Minaur get the win? Will Soonwoo Kwon pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where the in-form Australian faces a tough first challenge. Who will triumph and move through to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Tokyo Open?
Alex de Minaur has been having a solid season, maintaining his place among the world’s top ranked while getting some good wins along the way. While it’ll be a tough first round match, I expect him to get through this one for sure. Soonwoo Kwon can produce some amazing tennis at his best level, but de Minaur is a tier higher than he is, so I expect him to continue that level to take down Soonwoo Kwon and book himself a place in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Tokyo Open.

Soonwoo Kwon has been playing some good tennis this year, getting some great wins along the way, and he has a shot to pull off a stunner here against Alex de Minaur. While it’s certainly not likely that he gets the win, if he plays his very best stuff, it’ll be hard to stop him. I do like the conditions for de Minaur though, and I expect him to come through this one and into the last 16 at the 2022 Tokyo Open.
Alex de Minaur and Soonwoo Kwon have met once before, with Alex de Minaur leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came in the semifinals of Eastbourne in 2021, with de Minaur going on to win the title. I expect a similar result here, with de Minaur taking it in straight sets, but not without doubt and struggle as these two look to battle ahead of the Round of 16 here at the 2022 Tokyo Open.
