TennisSection previews the 2022 Laver Cup as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Diego Schwartzman on Day 1 on Friday, September 23rd 2022.

With the eyes of the departing Roger Federer glued on this match, Stefanos Tsitsipas will be under massive pressure to perform at his absolute best level. And we know for a fact that the Greek is a man who can crumble in the wake of pressure. How will be handle the occasion when he plays Diego Schwartzman on Day 1 of the Laver Cup?
Stefanos Tsitsipas’ pursuit for that first Grand Slam title will have to wait at least for another year. The trailblazing Greek fell to a shock first-round defeat at this year’s US Open to Colombian joruneyman Daniel Elahi Galan – a defeat that shook Tsitsipas’ confidence to the core. It also gave us a further reminder of just how inconsistent the substitutes of tennis’ famous Big Three will be like once they all hung up their rackets. But now that the tennis world is getting accustomed to these sort of results, it is not a surprise anymore.

Diego Schwartzman, meanwhile, will be sensing blood and a chance to make a real statement for Team World at the Laver Cup. Should the Argentine get the win, that puts enormous pressure for Andy Murray to win his bout against Alex De Minaur –a match the Scotsman will be an underdog. It is entirely possible that Team Europe might be trailing by the time Federer and Nadal take center stage, so Tsitsipas will be keen not to deviate from the script.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman have played five times, with the head-to-head currently 3-2 in the Greek’s favor. That includes two successive wins in 2022, although Schwartzman shocked the World No. 6 at the ATP Cup at the turn of the year Down Under. Schwartzman’s defense could worry Tsitsipas who has a tendency of overcooking his shots when he under the slightest pressure to hit an extra ball. A win for the Argentine might just give us a highly competitive Laver Cup tournament this year, and I think he’ll get it done.
