Alessandro Giannessi came through a very tight straight sets win against Jiri Vesely, beating him 7-6/7-5. Alessandro Giannessi showed some great composure throughout the match, coming back from a fair few breaks to get the job done and book himself a spot in the Second Round. Giannessi will be confident after that win, but he will also know that he cannot afford to keep things as tight against someone as talented and as strong as Richard Gasquet on both sides of the court. Will Giannessi cause the big upset and make his way to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Umag Open?
Richard Gasquet will be aiming to find the form he knows he can play with on clay. Gasquet had a tough start to his week last week, losing in the opening round of the Nordea Open losing to Marco Cecchinato in 3 sets. If Richard was playing even 20% better than he was in that match, I believe he would have won it. However, he was not consistent enough in his efforts. Here at the 2021 Umag Open, Richard will be aiming to get off to a better start and cruise through his first opponent, Alessandro Giannesi, to make his way to the Quarter-Finals.
Richard Gasquet and Alessandro Giannessi have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Giannessi is 31 years old and has played for over 13 years professionally, however, this has been on the Challenger Tour. Richard Gasquet is much more experienced in the top tier of tennis and he will not want to let a Challenger level player cause an upset against him. Gasquet has a beautiful and super fast one-handed backhand, which will allow him to move Alessandro to his backhand side easily and prevent him from hitting his powerful forehand. Once this is taken out of play, Richard can dominate and make his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Umag Open.
