Metz Open 2022: Lorenzo Sonego vs. Gilles Simon Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Metz Open as Lorenzo Sonego takes on Gilles Simon in the Round of 16 on Thursday, September 22nd, 2022.

Will Lorenzo Sonego get the win? Will Gilles Simon pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have the Frenchman coming off a great win taking on the talented Italian. Who will triumph and move through to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Metz Open?

Lorenzo Sonego got a solid win over Aslan Karatsev to book an interesting matchup with Gilles Simon. If Sonego wants to win this one, I think he’ll have to step it up despite being the favorite. Simon played a great match, and I really don’t like this matchup for Sonego. He’ll have to play some very aggressive tennis and make sure to stay flawless on serve if he wants a shot at the last eight here at the 2022 Metz Open.

Gilles Simon took down David Goffin 6-3 6-3, a very important win for the Frenchman as he attempts to draw a fine career to a close. Lorenzo Sonego won’t be easy, but if he was able to dispatch of Goffin so easily, I expect him to be able to put on a show once more. Sonego doesn’t have any killer weapons, so Simon’s counterpunching and defensive style will really help him out here at the 2022 Metz Open.

Lorenzo Sonego and Gilles Simon have met once before, with Lorenzo Sonego leading the head to head 1-0. While their one meeting did come on the clay, it’s a positive indicator for Sonego as he can draw on past experience here. Simon is playing pretty solid as of right now though, and if Sonego wants to take it to him on a faster court, he’s going to have to play some of his very best tennis to have a shot here at the 2022 Metz Open.
