US Open 2022: Diego Schwartzman vs. Jack Sock Tennis Pick and Prediction

Number 14 seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman will meet Jack Sock of the United States in the First Round of the 2022 US Open. The match is scheduled to be played on Tuesday August 30th, 2022 at 8:15pm EST.

Diego Schwartzman and Jack Sock will do battle in the headline match on Louis Armstrong Stadium on August 29th. This is really an intriguing match between two popular players, and the fans will definitely enjoy this one. Schwartzman is the favorite on paper, but Sock will have the local support on his side. Who will get the win here and move on to Round Two at the US Open?

Diego Schwartzman has been a staple in the top 20 of the world rankings for quite some time and is easily one of the more popular players on Tour. The Argentine has had some great results over the years on both hard on clay, but it is no secret that he struggles on the faster surfaces due to his relatively weak serve and his inability to hit through the top players from the baseline. He makes up for that with his incredible effort and movement, and there are not many better counterpunchers in the game today. Schwartzman will face an opponent ranked almost 100 spots behind him in Jack Sock but the American is highly experienced, will have the crowd behind him and is no stranger to big matches, being a former top 10 player. Despite the gulf in the rankings he will have a battle on his hands and will need to be at his consistent best to get through this challenge at the US Open.

Jack Sock is ranked much lower than his opponent Diego Schwartzman, but plays exactly the type of fearless tennis that could give him a shot at the upset. At #107 in the rankings, the casual tennis fan may not give him much of a chance but when you consider his experience and past success, you know that this match will be much closer than it appears. Sock has a huge serve and forehand but his fitness and mobility are pretty big weaknesses at this point and we have seen that in his recent results. On the year he holds just a 7-9 record on the ATP Tour and it is hard to envision a deep run here at the US Open, despite the best efforts or him and the New York crowd. Schwartzman is not the most consistent player on this surface and is not the greatest form either, but all signs are pointing to a tough match here for the American.

This is the second meeting between the two players, with Jack Sock leading the head to head 1-0. That match was a three set battle in Rome on clay five years ago, so it should not be taken into consideration when predicting this match, especially given Sock’s fitness issues since then. One thing is for sure is that this will be an treat for tennis fans, and the atmosphere and tennis will be electric. Diego Schwartzman is not the most reliable player on hard courts, but he certainly is more reliable than Jack Sock at this stage in their careers. The American is still capable of some very good tennis and lives for the big stage, so I do think that the crowd will inspire him to win a set, but it is too much to expect him to win a five set match against one of the best and most consistent players in the world. It will be an incredible match, with Schwartzman winning in four or five sets here at the US Open.
