TennisSection previews the 2022 Cincinnati Masters as Andy Murray takes on Cameron Norrie in the second round on Wednesday, August 17th, 2022.
After taking down Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray will look to make a statement of intent in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters. The former champion will play current British No. 1 Cameron Norrie in an enticing matchup on Wednesday. Who do you think will come out on top?
Andy Murray defeated longtime rival Stan Wawrinka 7-6 5-7 7-5 in a blockbuster first-round match at the Cincinnati Masters. Murray, who retains slim hopes of attaining a seeding spot at the US Open, came through by the tightest of margins. The Scot will be pleased with his game and fitness. The match itself lasted a little over two and half hours and Murray felt physically fine after all. He won 80% first-serve points and got the decisive break late in the third set to close out victory.
Cameron Norrie, for his part, won his maiden main draw match at the Cincinnati Masters. After falling in the qualifying rounds in 2018 and 2019, and losing to John Isner in the first round last season, Norrie was targeting to get on the board at the Western & Southern Open. And he duly delivered in a very tricky opening match against Denmark’s fast-rising star Holger Rune. Rune’s fierce ground strokes had given Norrie the runaround in the second set. But once the World No. 11 managed to regroup in the decider, he began to swing freely out of his topspin forehand. Eventually, he closed out the Dane in three.
Andy Murray leads Cameron Norrie 1-0 in their head-to-head. That solitary meeting took place in the indoor hard courts of Beijing in 2019 where Murray shocked his compatriot 7-6 6-7 6-1. Despite Murray making a heroic comeback on the ATP Tour (and re-entering the Top 50 against all the odds), Norrie has established himself among the world’s best in the past year. He has also taken over the mantle of British No. 1 and is playing some of the best tennis of his career. Murray candidly spoke about how his body is in the best shape possible since surgery a few years ago. But he is likely to get drawn into a lot of those cat-and-mouse games that will test his surgically-repaired hip.
