Montreal Masters 2022: Felix Auger-Aliassime vs. Casper Ruud Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Montreal Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 12th, 2022.

Will Felix Auger-Aliassime get the win? Will Casper Ruud pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where the top Canadian continues his special run at home as he faces his toughest battle yet. Who will triumph and move on to the semifinals at the 2022 Montreal Open?

Felix Auger-Aliassime got a very important win over Cameron Norrie, once again under an incredible atmosphere, taking him down in straight sets. As he looks ahead to Casper Ruud, he’ll have plenty of things to be happy about in this matchup. Although Ruud does have the killer instinct off his forehand wing to punish the weaknesses of FAA, Felix is serving so well and hitting so consistently from the back of the court that I can’t see anything Ruud can do to really outplay him as these two clash for a spot in the semifinals of the 2022 Montreal Open.

Casper Ruud took down Roberto Bautista Agut in a tight 3 setter, although it certainly wasn’t his best tennis, what matters is that he found a way to win. It’s going to be much tougher to find a way out of this contest with Felix Auger-Aliassime, though. FAA is playing some of his best tennis, and I can’t see Ruud being able to outplay him unless he goes all out, but the exceptional movement of the Canadian will frustrate the Norwegian even more as they fight for a spot in the last 4 at the 2022 Montreal Open.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Casper Ruud have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Although I don’t find their head to head to be particularly relevant in this match, FAA won their meeting in Miami back in 2019, while Ruud took him out in Madrid last year. This hard court is probably as good of conditions as Ruud can ask for, but Felix will be the favorite on a hard court any day against him. Auger-Aliassime hasn’t’ dropped a set yet, and I expect that trend to continue as he looks to capitalize on the best atmosphere he’s ever had in his career and claim a place in the last 4 at the 2022 Montreal Open.
