Italy’s Next Gen star Lorenzo Musetti will battle power-hitting Emil Ruusuvuori for a spot in the quarterfinals of the Hamburg Open. Will Musetti utilize his clay-court nous to defeat his Finnish opponent?

Lorenzo Musetti was pushed to his absolute limits by DusanLajovic, but had the answers in a three-hour thriller and thwarted the Serbian’s hopes of scoring a first-round upset. The 20-year-old is playing the Hamburg Open for the first time, and was the odds-on favorite to win his first-round match. That was despite Musetti arriving in Germany on a four-match winless dating back to the Forli Challenger-the scene of his last win. But after saving match points he clawed his way back into the match and went on to win 6-7 7-6 6-3.

Emil Ruusuvuori, for his part, was handed a nightmarish draw at the Hamburg Open. He was pitted against the number three seed Diego Schwartzman. Strangely enough, The Argentine struggled to impose himself against the brute firepower coming out of the Finn’s racket. Schwartzman had lost so handily in his last outing at the Nordea Open and seemed to be struggling with confidence as Ruusuvuori bludgeoned winner after another from the back of the court. The 23-year-old Ruusuvuori broke his opponent four times from 10 opportunities, wrapping up victory in over two hours.

Lorenzo Musetti and Emil Ruusuvuori have not met on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s clash at the Hamburg Open will be their first official meeting. Musetti needed a result on Monday to stop the rot regardless of his performance, and he certainly got the job done. Both players have struggled for consistency at fluctuating periods this year, but if you were to pick a winner on clay, the young Italian has the ingredients to serve up a win on his favorite surface.
