Nordea Open 2022: Aslan Karatsev vs. Hugo Gaston Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Nordea Open as Aslan Karatsev takes on Hugo Gaston in the second round on Wednesday, July 13th, 2022.

Will Aslan Karatsev record back-to-back wins on the ATP Tour for the frsit time since January? Or will Hugo Gaston’s unorthodox style prove unbearable for the Russian power hitter? This should be an intriguing matchup as both players look to get to the quarterfinals of the Nordea Open.

Aslan Karatsev maintained his 100% winning record over Lorenzo Sonego after dismissing the Italian 6-0 2-6 6-4 in their first round encounter at the Nordea Open. The Russian went on to win the title in each of his last two wins over Sonego, and he will hope that is the case in Bastad. Karatsev’s season has gone from bad to worse in recent weeks. And with allegations over a possible match fixing involving Karatsev, this year could turn out to be more complicated than imagined for the former World No. 14.

Hugo Gaston, meanwhile, advanced into the second round of the Nordea Open after his opponent Nikoloz Basilashvili retired midway through the match. Gaston had led the Georgian 7-6 3-0 when the Gerogian was forced to retire apparently due to injury. Basilashvili established a 5-2 lead at one point in the first set, before errors began to creep in his game. He wasn’t able to sustain his excellent hitting for long, paving the way for Gaston to get back into the contest. The Frenchman duly obliged and went on to dominate for the first three games of the second set, at which Basilashvili retired.

Aslan Karatsev and Hugo Gaston have not played each other on the ATP Tour before this. However, the pair contest a first-round match at the Pau Challenger in 2020, with Gaston coming out on top in three sets. Karatsev earned a massive win in the first round at the Nordea Open over the accomplished Sonego, and that should help his confidence which is clearly lacking for most of the season. While Gaston is no slouch, and certainly possesses a brand of tennis made to trouble the Russian, I think he will fall short.
