Last year’s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas has been handed what is feasibly the toughest first-rounder by any seeded player at this year’s French Open. The Greek will lock horns against flamboyant Italian Lorenzo Musetti in a mouthwatering opener on Tuesday. Who will prevail?
Stefanos Tsitsipas was probably the biggest winner of the 2022 French Open draw. The Greek star landed in the bottom half of the draw and far away from defending champion Novak Djokovic, 21-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz – all of whom are in the same half. However, Tsitsipas has drawn a very tricky opener in the form of Lorenzo Musetti. If he can sail past the Italian (who famously led Djokovic by two sets to love last year), there are not many stumbling blocks in his way to the quarterfinals where he could meet Geneva champion Casper Ruud.
Lorenzo Musetti, meanwhile, will be looking to draw upon fond memories from last year’s trip to the French Open. Musetti played a fine tournament last season, where he reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time. He defeated the likes of David Goffin and Marco Cecchinato, and nearly shocked Novak Djokovic in the fourth round. The 20-year-old hasn’t quite managed to live up to his teenage promise but has a bright future ahead of him. Can he upstage Tsitsipas in what will surely be the upset of the day?
Stefanos Tsitsipas leads Lorenzo Musetti 2-0 in tour-level meetings. Both matches took place last season, with Tsitsipas winning in Acapulco and on the clay in Lyon. Musetti wandered off his game for quite some time after his catastrophic collapse against Djokovic at last year’s French Open. But he seems to be back on his feet again during this clay swing. Unfortunately for the Italian he has been recipient of an unkind draw and Tsitsipas is in the form of his life.
