TennisSection previews the Indian Wells 2022 as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Mackenzie McDonald in the Round of 64 on Saturday, March 12th, 2022.
Will Carlos Alcaraz get the win? Will Mackenzie McDonald pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most popular next-gen stars taking on a home-town hero with quite a bit of skill himself. Who will triumph to move through to the Round of 32 at Indian Wells 2022?
Carlos Alcaraz does not have an easy opponent ahead of him in Mackenzie McDonald. While I do expect him to win with his recent level of play, he sometimes has shaky starts, and at just 18 years of age you cannot expect him to always play consistently. Having said that though, I still have very little doubt that he can overpower McDonald. The court speed is incredibly favorable for him, as he definitely will prefer a slow court but can still handle a fast court beautifully, while McDonalds style honestly relies on quicker pace. Let’s see what the young Spaniard can do as he aims to progress at Indian Wells 2022.
Mackenzie McDonald got a nice first round win, pulling off an upset to set up an even tougher meeting. If he wants to win this one, he will have to hope Alcaraz is off his game. He plays a more classic game, going big from the baseline with a solid serve and a nice net game. Those kinds of things aren’t really what you need on a court like this though. Alcaraz also has all of those things, but he also has much more. He can rally, and he can hit heavy, which will surely trouble McDonald as he aims to somehow manage to pull off this upset and book himself a place in the next round at Indian Wells 2022.
Carlos Alcaraz and Mackenzie McDonald have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a good matchup for Carlos Alcaraz on this court, and I do think it would be a pretty see-saw match up on a quicker surface as McDonald would probably have some finesse and some aggression that could really push Alcaraz. The court speed isn’t so significant that your tennis simply doesn’t carry over, but in Alcaraz’s case, his tennis will be amplified coming up against McDonald, and I expect him to use that to book a spot in the Round of 32 at Indian Wells 2022.
