TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Iga Swiatek takes on Danielle Collins in the semifinal on Thursday, January 27th, 2022.
Iga Swiatek will return to Rod Laver Arena to lock horns with Danielle Collins for the right to be in Saturday’s Australian Open final. This match will be played in just about 24 hours after both players navigated their respective quarterfinals successfully.
It is not often that Iga Swiatek rallies from a set down to win tennis matches. But having done so successfully in back-to-back matches on the senior tour for the first time in her career, she remains on course to hit the jackpot this weekend. But first of, an in-form Danielle Collins awaits in Thursday’s semifinal. Swiatek had one foot out of the tournament when she trailed big-hitting Kaia Kanepi by a set and a break. The young Pole has reiterated, her mental strength is a glaring area of weakness. This explains why Swiatek won just three matches from a set behind in the whole of 2021. But this expected for a player of her age who is balancing expectations with her potential. Swiatek showed grit and her youth exuberance as she fought back to deny the Estonian a place in the semifinals of the Australian Open with a thoroughly absorbing three-set win.
Danielle Collins, meanwhile, reached her second semifinal at the Australian Open courtesy of a 7-5 6-1 win over Simona Halep’s conqueror Alize Cornet. Collins’ brought the shutters down for the wily Frenchwoman whose emotional and physical toll from that battling victory over Halep became too much to bear. And the American was the biggest beneficiary as she edged out Cornet in a tight first set before racing to victory in a one-sided second set.
Iga Swiatek leads Danielle Collins 1-0 in their head-to-head. It is pertinent to note, that meeting was played at the Adelaide International last season, where the American retired midway through the second set due to injury. The situation is slightly different this week. Collins is past her injury and illness nightmares. The American is a nuisance to play against due to her ultra-aggressive style of tennis. But I do worry for Collins coming into this match. There is a downside to her style if she cannot control her power. Swiatek’s superior athleticism will enable her to turn defense into attack in many rallies. If this ends up being a battle of the wits, then the Polish number seven seed is the clear favorite.
