Australian Open 2022: Felix Auger-Aliassime vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round on Thursday, January 20th, 2022.

Will Alejandro Davidovich Fokina find an extra level in his game as he aims to cruise through yet another opponent? Will Felix Auger-Aliassime get some rest and be ready for yet another tough opponent early on? Both players are young and determined to go far this year. However, only one will make their way to the third round of the 2022 Australian Open. Who will it be?

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina cruised through his opening round match, beating the local Aussie, Alex Bolt, in straight sets 6-3 / 6-3 / 6-4. Alejandro is a very solid player, and he showed us that he can maintain composure on his serve even against big hitters. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is aiming to reach that next level in 2022, becoming a mainstay in the later rounds of ATP 250 and 500 tournaments. Here at the 2022 Australian Open, Alejandro can be happy with his opening round win, but he now has to face the world no.9 in Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Felix Auger-Aliassime had an extremely tough opening round match, playing against the flat hitting Emil Ruusuvuori. Felix won the match in 5 sets, having to come back from 2-1 sets down and having even lost one of those sets 6-0. The match was really tight and it seemed as if Emil would win up until the middle of the fourth set when Felix finally started to find his rhythm. Having played such a tough opening round match at the 2022 Australian Open, Felix will know that he needs an easier match to get some confidence and get some additional recovery. However, he meets the tough Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have met 1 time before, with Felix leading the head to head 1-0. They met in a challenger tour event in 2018 where Felix won in straight sets. Although when looking at their opening matches here at the 2022 Australian Open, Alejandro had an easier match and did not have to fight for 4 hours, the level of opponent was drastically different. Fokina is a solid player, but he is still not fully adapted to hard courts and how he can find his best tennis in these conditions. Felix is at home in these conditions and he will have learnt a lot from his mistakes in his first match. I expect a somewhat tight match, but Felix should get the job done.
