Australian Open 2022: Paula Badosa vs. Ajla Tomljanovic Tennis Pick and Prediction

Australian Open 2022: Paula Badosa vs. Ajla Tomljanovic Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Paula Badosa takes on Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round on Monday, January 17th, 2022.

After hoisting her third WTA title in Sydney on Saturday, Paula Badosa will have a day’s rest before she makes the trip to Melbourne to face the dangerous home favorite Ajla Tomljanovic in the pick of the first-round matches in the women’s section. Can the Spaniard keep the ball rolling?

Paula Badosa is in red-hot form ahead of her Australian Open bout on Monday. The eighth-seeded Spaniard is one of the pre-tournament favorites to win the year’s first Grand Slam in a fortnight’s time after her remarkable rise in the past year. Badosa famously won the biggest title of her career in Indian Wells towards the end of last season defeating former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in a pulsating final. That match announced Badosa’s arrival on the big stage proper. And she is in a rich vein of form at the start of the Australian summer swing. Her title triumph in Sydney saw the Spanish World No. 9 best five Top 50 players – none ranked lower than 45, including the World No. 4 Barbora Krejcikova. Badosa will face Ajla Tomoljanovic in her opening match in Melbourne on Monday – one of the players she beat en route to the title this week.

Ajla Tomljanovic will be gunning for an upset win over Paula Badosa at the 2022 Australian Open. The pair of them will square off for the second week running, and this could be a chance for Tomljanovic to write off the wrongs from their previous encounter. Tomljanovic might catch the Spaniard cold especially now that she if fully fresh and has had nearly a week of match practice at Melbourne Park. Badosa will have little time to adjust and an upset could be on the cards.

Monday’s match at the Australian Open between Paula Badosa and Ajla Tomljanovic will be the second career meeting, with Badosa leading the head-to-head 1-0. As mentioned at the top of the article, Badosa defeated the Aussie at the Sydney International en route to her third career title. Barring a possible fitness concern after a long and arduous week, Badosa should overcome a stiff challenge from the local favorite for the second week in succession.
