TennisSection previews the 2022 Adelaide 2 Open as Marin Cilic takes on Thanasi Kokkinakis in the semifinal on Friday, January 14th, 2022.
Will Marin Cilic reach his first final of the season at the Adelaide 2 Open? Or will Thanasi Kokkinakis prove to be the speed bump in his way? The crowd will most certainly be in the thick of the action, and it could just be tonic that sets Kokkinakis to stop the Croatian in his tracks.
Marin Cilic’s quest for a 21st ATP title continued at the Adelaide 2 Open after the Croatian power-hitter defeated Tommy Paul in three sets. Cilic took the first set after producing some clutch serving. He saved a pair of break points and converted one of his own to win it 6-4. But the Croatian’s level dropped massively in the second set as Paul let his forehand do the talking, punishing a complacent Cilic to level. But the former World No. 3 was back to his absolute best in the third set as Paul’s second serve deteriorated. This represents a second successive semifinal that the Croatian star has reached in 2022.
Next up will be Thanasi Kokkinakis who is relishing the opportunity of performing in front of a vociferous home crowd at the Adelaide 2 Open. Kokkinakis, who is an Adelaide native, needed three sets and two hours and 16 minutes to land the telling blow at his countryman Aleksandar Vukic. Kokkinakis takes his time spent on court in the last two matches to just over five hours. He has beaten John Isner in the previous round in a match that lasted 15 minutes shy of three hours.
Marin Cilic and Thanasi Kokkinakis have not played each other at any level. I feel like Kokkinakis has been living on the edge these past two matches. But it gets crazier to imagine he hasn’t been broken all week. The last two sets he has dropped were in a tiebreak. However, I get the impression that the experience of Cilic will be a crucial factor as is his fitness level. We saw how Gael Monfils managed the Australian with his technical ability and physicality. If Cilic can replicate that sort of performance, he can wear down the Aussie.
