TennisSection previews the 2022 Adelaide 2 Open as Marin Cilic takes on Jaume Munar in the second round on Wednesday, January 12th, 2022.
Will Marin Cilic do better at the Adelaide 2 Open and reach his first final of the season? Or will Jaume Munar inflict a second defeat of the season to the current World No. 29? Cilic reached the semifinal at last week’s Adelaide 1 International losing to Karen Khachanov in straight sets.
Marin Cilic is back in the big time. After a couple of seasons in the doldrums, the Croatian has re-established himself on the ATP Tour in the past six months, winning two ATP titles and re-entering the world’s Top 30. Cilic will be seeded at this year’s Australian Open, possibly giving him a stress-free opener. Cilic’s 2022 season has started in positive fashion. The 33-year-old has elected to play two warm up events as a result of his ranking rise, reaching the semifinals in Adelaide 1 this past week and signing up for the second event in the same city. He does have a tricky customer in Jaume Munar having received a bye in the first round.
Jaume Munar much likes to play on clay, but he has put himself up to the task of excelling on hard courts. Munar was under Rafael Nadal’s wing last week, with the pair of them joining forces and competing in doubles. However, it was only for a solitary match as they forfeited their participation in the subsequent round as both of them made deep runs in singles. Nadal would win the 89th tour level title of his career, while Munar would make the last eight losing to the eventual runner-up Maxime Cressy. The 24-year-old will look to replicate that form at the Adelaide 2 Open when he takes on Marin Cilic.
Marin Cilic will play Jaume Munar for the first time on the ATP Tour. Cilic has played fantastically well in the first week of the season which is so unlike him. He is a momentum player and always tends to be slow off the blocks. But in this kind of form, he is so hard to bet against. Jaume Munar, for his part, secured another confidence-boosting win over John Millman, but he should be no match for the former World No. 3.
