TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Daniil Medvedev takes on Jannik Sinner in the group stages on Thursday, November 18th, 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Jannik Sinner pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the top player of the group taking on a surprise next-gen star playing at a great level. Who will finish the group stages on the best note at the 2021 ATP Finals?
Daniil Medvedev got through a tough battle with Alexander Zverev to take on alternate Jannik Sinner in place of Matteo Berrettini, who unfortunately withdrew due to an abdominal injury. Either way, Medvedev remains the clear favorite to take him down and finish 3-0 in his group. Sinner plays a huge game, and Medvedev absorbs it really well, also being able to defend against the fury of winners Sinner likes to put on display. Since Sinner doesn’t pull the trigger instantly and likes to warm up the point, Medvedev isn’t really ever in trouble as all of his shots come back low, fast and consistently. Medvedev may struggle against him, as he doesn’t have nearly as much motivation as Sinner does on top of the fact that he struggled against Zverev and Hurkacz at certain points of his matches, while Sinner crushed Hurkacz, playing incredibly aggressively. Let’s see if Medvedev can continue to dominate and take down the young talent to finish undefeated and move on to the semifinals at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Jannik Sinner got an incredible win to upset Hurkacz 6-2 6-2, absolutely bludgeoning the ball, playing incredibly aggressively and just hitting winner after winner off both wings. To do the same thing against Medvedev though, will be a much tougher task considering Hurkacz brought a very low level to the court today. Sinner was hitting huge, warming the points up, then just going for the winner, he also served huge and managed to get a lot of returns back with tons of power. His level was just incredible, and considering Medvedev has been a little choppy, while I by no means expect Sinner to upset him, I do think he will push him if he plays the same way as he did today. Let’s see if Sinner can miraculously take down the World No. 2 and have a shot at the semifinals of the 2021 ATP Finals.
Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner have met twice before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings both came on indoor hard courts, with one coming in 2020 in a time where Medvedev was out of form, but still won the match in three lopsided sets. Their second meeting came early this year in Marseille, where Medvedev crushed Sinner and eventually went on to win the title. Medvedev can play well against a power player like Sinner, he loves to absorb the pace and his serve and return are so good that playing aggressive off the get go is difficult unless you can come to the net. Let’s see if Medvedev can get through this tough test to go undefeated in his group and move into the semifinals of the 2021 ATP Finals roaring with confidence.
