TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Matteo Berrettini takes on Hubert Hurkacz in the group stages on Tuesday, November 16th, 2021.
Will Matteo Berrettini get the win? Will Hubert Hurkacz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the crowd favorite taking on a flashy new-comer. Who will make a comeback and get his first win of the 2021 ATP Finals?
Matteo Berrettini played an emotional match against Zverev, having to retire after losing a very tight first set (7-9 in the tiebreaker). He hurt his abdomen and had to retire early in the second, he and his team are still examining his injury to determine whether or not he will play. Assuming he can even make it to the match, it will be a tough one against any player, let alone world no. 7 Hubert Hurkacz. Hurkacz has been playing some unbelievable tennis, so despite the fact that Berrettini will have the crowd behind him, Hurkacz just hits too big of a ball and is too versatile of a player for Berrettini to be able to go too long with him in the rallies before hurting himself. Let’s see if he can regroup to take on the Pol as he aims to make a roaring comeback from below and get a win in his home at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Hubert Hurkacz suffered a tough loss against Daniil Medvedev, winning the first set in a tiebreak, and dropping the next two 3 and 4. He played quite well, and showed a lot of promise of being able to do well this tournament. He is rather fortunate this time around as he is coming up against Matteo Berrettini considering the drama of his last match. With the way Hurkacz has been playing, he will likely come out firing on all cylinders, serving big and taking advantage of Berrettini’s weaker service. Hurkacz can be inconsistent at times, but I think he’ll know what kind of opportunity he has and play a disciplined game to grab the win and try to make a comeback in his group at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Matteo Berrettini and Hubert Hurkacz have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their first meeting came at the 2019 edition of the Miami Masters, with Hurkacz easily winning, their second meeting however came at Wimbledon this year in the semifinals in a rather strange match. It was four sets, but that result is rather misleading, as Berrettini easily dominated him in the first two sets, even bageling him. However, they’re on a hard court now, and comparing the way the two have been performing recently on top of Berrettini’s injury, it’s hard to go with any result except for Hurkacz taking this one in straights as he aims to go 1-1 in the group stages at the 2021 ATP Finals.
