ATP Finals 2021: Daniil Medvedev vs. Hubert Hurkacz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Daniil Medvedev takes on Hubert Hurkacz in the Round Robin stage on Sunday, November 14th, 2021.

Will Daniil Medvedev win? Will Hubert Hurkacz pull off the upset on his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals? This is a mouthwatering opening match at the 2021 ATP Finals. Medvedev is the defending champion and is the tournament’s second seed, while Hurkacz will make his first appearance at the season-ending finale.

Daniil Medvedev will attempt to become the first player to defend the ATP Finals crown since Novak Djokovic between 2013 – 2015. The Russian has undeniably been the second-best player in the world this season, having captured four titles including his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open. Victory in New York was of major relevance. Not only did it stop Djokovic from completing the calendar-year Grand Slam, but it also solidified Medvedev’s burgeoning rise as a fully-fledged Grand Slam winner for years to come. Medvedev has put together a 54-12 record for the season and finished runner-up to the Serbian World No. 1 at the Paris Masters. He opens up his ATP Finals campaign against the last man to qualify – Hubert Hurkacz.

Indeed, Hubert Hurkacz left it so late to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin. The Polish No. 1 was jostling with the likes of Jannik Sinner and Cameron Norrie for the last remaining slot. The race went down to the wire. Hurkacz’s semifinal run in Bercy coupled with his rivals’ early exits confirmed his place. But the Pole’s first Masters 1000 triumph at the Miami Open might have given him some impetus – points wise and playing wise. Hurkacz did beat Sinner in that final to collect 1000 ranking points. Ahead of his meeting with Daniil Medvedev, another classic could be in store.

Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz have contested two previous matches on tour. The head-to-head is tied at 1-1. Hurkacz famously stunned the Russian in the Round of 16 at the Wimbledon Championships in July en route to his maiden Grand Slam semifinal. However, Medvedev produced a serving masterclass to avenge that defeat at the Toronto Masters in another close tussle. I like Medvedev’s chances of winning on Sunday. Historically, he always makes a fast start at tournaments and is certainly well-equipped to handle Hurkacz’s power now that he has faced him multiple times.
