TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Pablo Carreno Busta takes on Benoit Paire in the Round of 64 on Monday, November 1st, 2021.
Will Pablo Carreno Busta pick up the win? Will Benoit Paire produce an upset? A rivalry that started in 2011 will be renewed when two of the ATP’s seasoned campaigners go toe-to-toe for the 13th time.
Pablo Carreno Busta is certainly a nominee for the ATP’s most improved player accolade for the 2021 season. With two titles under his belt, including his biggest yet at the European Open in Hamburg, this has been a truly standout campaign for the 30-year-old. Carreno Busta was also the headline act for his country at the Tokyo Olympics this year. In the absence of their legendary player Rafael Nadal, Carreno Busta spearheaded the Spanish tennis contingent and walked out from Japan’s capital with a singles bronze medal. He had to beat Daniil Medevedev, Karen Khachanov and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to garner this monumental achievement. The feel good factor hasn’t deserted him yet, as he reached his third ATP final of 2021. But he finished on the losing side against Hubert Hurkacz in Metz. Can the Spanish baseliner withstand a fiery Benoit Paire at the Paris Masters?
Benoit Paire has been crying out for fans to return to the courts. But even with the turnstiles opening once again in the midst of the pandemic, Paire’s fortunes have not improved substantially. With just 14 wins from a possible 46, the Frenchman has been on the forefront of criticism from the tennis fraternity. He was expelled from representing France at the Tokyo Olympics for what was termed as inappropriate behavior. Paire confessed of losing motivation playing tennis without any spectators. And his jarring run of results could come at a hefty price. Paire is on the cusp of dropping out of the world’s Top 50. He has one win in seven matches coming to the Paris Masters.
Benoit Paire leads the head-to-head 8-4, but they haven’t played each other since the 2019 season. Pablo Carreno Busta has certainly turned a corner this year and could solidify his place inside the world’s Top 20. While you would expect Paire to show a lot more resistance indoors, he has performed dismally in a handful of appearances. Carreno Busta’s discipline and counterpunching abilities should see him cross the finish line in this one at the 2021 Paris Masters.
