Frances Tiafoe pulled off an amazing comeback win against Stefanos Tsitsipas, beating the title favourite and much higher ranked opponent in 3 sets, 3-6/6-3/6-4. This is now 2 wins against Tsitsipas this year from Frances Tiafoe, and this should give him a lot of confidence in his ability to get even more wins against higher ranked opponents who are in or close to the top 10. Frances has great assets in his game all around, and he just needs to ensure he picks his shots and does not get impatient. If he can do that, I am sure he stands a strong chance against the likes of Diego Schwartzman here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
Diego Schwartzman also had to fight through a 3 set match the always tough and entertaining, Gael Monfils, beating him 7-6/4-6/6-2. Diego was able to outlast the Frenchman physically, but I am sure that if Monfils had some more stamina left in the tank, the third set would have been much closer. Diego is a great returner, one of the best on the ATP Tour, and he will know that if he is able to continue playing this well in these conditions, he still has a slight chance to make the ATP Finals if he goes very far in Paris. However, this is still hard to do, especially as he meets opponents like Frances Tiafoe here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
Diego Schwartzman and Frances Tiafoe have met 2 times before, with Diego Schwartzman leading the head to head 2-0. They met this year, a couple months ago in Cincinnati, where Diego won in 3 sets. However, when moving to indoor hard courts, I think the conditions favour the American a bit more. Adding to this, Frances beat a much tougher and higher ranked opponent in the Round of 16, so he will know that if he can do that, he should be able to beat Diego. I think it will be tight, but the momentum should push Frances Tiafoe over the line and get into the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Vienna Open.
