TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Brandon Nakashima will face Federico Coria in the First Round on Friday October 8th, 2021.
Can the young American Brandon Nakashima continue his strong run of results on hard courts with a win here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open? Or will the veteran Federico Coria of Argentina use his experience to stop him? This match seems evenly poised and all signs point towards it being a very close affair. Who will get the win and advance to the Second Round?
Federico Coria is ranked #67 in the world rankings and is unseeded here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. The Argentine has been in mixed form lately, with the highlight of his season coming at the Swedish Open where he reached the Final, losing to Casper Ruud. Since then however his form has taken a dive with a Second Round exit at the Winston-Salem Open and losing in the First Round at the US Open. Coria is much more at home on the slower clay courts but is still a tough opponent across all surfaces, and has extensive experience. His opponent Brandon Nakashima has been impressive this year and has some major weapons so the Argentine is in for a tough time here in California.
Brandon Nakashima is currently ranked #83 and like his opponent Federico Coria is unseeded here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. The young American has long been touted as an exciting prospect on the ATP Tour and is finally living up to that billing in 2021, reaching two tour level Finals. While he will have been disappointed not to have won one of those, they would have gone a long way in building his confidence, and have given him the belief that he can compete at this level. Since those back to back Finals appearances his form has deserted him somewhat, and he will be hoping that the home crowd can help him to victory here. He has a very solid all-court game and a powerful serve, with no real weaknesses on this surface. If he is playing well then he should be considered the slight favorite here despite his lower ranking, but it won’t be easy here against a very tough and experienced opponent.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a very close match that will likely go the distance. Brandon Nakashima has every chance of winning here if he is able to keep his focus due to his advantage in the power department, but Federico Coria is extremely solid and will use every ounce of his experience to fight off the young American. It should be a very cagey affair with momentum swings going back and forth, but I ultimately expect Nakashima to pull ahead and win in three close sets. The crowd support will be crucial here, and I think that will be the difference and he can draw from their energy, willing himself to victory. Brandon Nakashima will win here, advancing to the Second Round of the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
