TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16 on Monday, September 6th, 2021.
Will Jannik Sinner show us how good he is once again by getting another top 10 win to add to his total, especially against a guy who he has beaten before? Will Alexander Zverev show him how much progress he has made since they last met and that he is either the second or third title favourite here in New York? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Jannik Sinner came through a 5-set thriller against the very experienced and beloved, Gael Monfils, beating the Frenchman in 5 sets 7-6/6-2/4-6/4-6/6-4. Jannik was in cruise control of the match, even being 4-1 in the fourth set, but Gael showed incredible resilience and Jannik showed some moments of weakness. However, when all the chips were down and both players had to show the hand they were dealt, Jannik came up with what he needed to get the win. Jannik will be very happy that he came through that match, but he will also know that he cannot allow for such a potential comeback to be possible now that he is in the business end of the tournament, especially if he is now meeting someone like Alexander Zverev here at the 2021 US Open.
Alexander Zverev came back from a set down against the American star, who had incredible support from the crowd, Jack Sock, beating him in 4 sets 3-6/6-2/6-3/2-1. Jack started off strongly, and Alexander poorly. However, Jack gave a bit too much to get that 1 set under his belt at the start, and this took a toll on him as the match went on, allowing Zverev to dominate as we are used to seeing from him in these conditions. Sock eventually had to retire from the match due to injury issues, and Zverev got himself in the Round of 16. Zverev will not be very happy that he lost that opening set, but he will be happy with how strongly he thought back, as he will need that strength as he now meets Jannik Sinner here at the 2021 US Open.
Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. They met both times in 2020, with Sinner winning their encounter at the French open, and then Zverev winning their match in Cologne. Jannik Sinner will know that he can beat Zverev, especially at a Grand Slam. However, you also have to look at where Zverev was when they met at the 2020 French Open. Zverev was not as good as he is now, struggling a lot on his serve and very up and down week after week. However, in 2021, Zverev is so close to being the best player out there, and Sinner has improved, but he showed a lot of weakness against Monfils. I see a tight match here, but I see the German using his experience and amazing rallying game to wear down the young Italian as he makes his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open.
