TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime (12) meets Roberto Bautista Agut (18) in the Third Round on Friday September 3rd, 2021.
Yet another thriller is expected here at the 2021 US Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime and Roberto Bautista Agut do battle for a spot in the Round of 16. Both men are experienced campaigners on the ATP Tour and it is a shame that they have to meet so early. Will it be the dynamic young Canadian Auger-Aliassime getting the win? Or can the veteran Spaniard RBA use his steady and measured approach to advance here?
Felix Auger-Aliassime is the twelfth seed here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #15 on the ATP Tour. The Canadian has long been considered one of the most promising young players on the ATP Tour and has been a consistent performer for the past few years. He has already reached an astonishing eight ATP Finals which some may say is a huge achievement, but it is also concerning that he continually falls at the final hurdle. He is certainly capable to win these types of events as he has all the physical tools, but the mental side of the game is what lets him down under pressure. He struggled a bit in his opening round win over Evgeny Donskoy but was more composed in the next round against Zapata Miralles. He knows that he will have to be at his best here against Roberto Bautista Agut as he will need to rely on his explosiveness and big groundstrokes, as he won’t be able to match his opponent when it comes to consistency.
Roberto Bautista Agut is the #18 seed here at the 2021 US Open, and is ranked #21. He has been a staple in the top 20 for many years, and will no doubt be seeking to get back inside with a strong performance here in New York. The veteran Spaniard is a fearsome competitor and has built a reputation of being one of the most consistent performers on the ATP Tour. While he has not had many great results lately he has seemingly found form at the right moment, demolishing both Nick Kyrgios and Emi Ruusuvuori to set up this blockbuster clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime. He has only lost 13 games in total in both of his straight-sets wins and in this type of form he has to be considered the slight favorite here against his younger opponent. It will definitely be a much tougher match that he has had so far but the Spaniard will be up for the challenge.
This is the third meeting between the two payers on the ATP Tour and the head to head is tied at 1-1. Their most recent match was in 2020 in Cologne, with the young Canadian winning in three tight sets. I am expecting yet another tight match, and would not be surprised if this goes the distance. Felix Auger-Aliassime has been the better player lately and has the advantage when it comes to his serve and power, but Roberto Bautista is much more consistent and experienced at the majors. I see this going right down to the wire but when it gets close give me the Spaniard to hold his nerve better and squeeze out the tough win. This is not a match to be missed and will be filled with lots of great tennis, but I am backing RBA to win here, advancing to the Round of 16 of the 2021 US Open.
