TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Elise Mertens takes on Ons Jabeur in the Round of 32 on Friday, September 3rd, 2021.
Will Elise Mertens go through? Will Ons Jabeur pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will likely have a close contest with two players who are very much in-form at the moment. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open?
Elise Mertens has been playing some real solid tennis, showing that high level as of late that we know she has in her. Despite being the higher seed and maybe the favorite to win the match, I would actually say that just based off of recent performances in general, her opponent Ons Jabeur is in fact the favorite in my eyes to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open. Despite that, Mertens is playing quite well and is definitely looking good as well to fight for a spot in the next round herself, I think the fate of the match will mostly depend on how aggressively Jabeur hits, if she doesn’t play that aggressive, Mertens will likely be able to turn the tide of most points in her favor and take the match for herself, however, I suspect Jabeur will put on a display of aggressive tennis and make it very hard for Mertens.
Ons Jabeur got one of the most dominant wins of the tournament in her second round match, winning 6-0 6-1. She’s playing that style of tennis that we know she loves to play, hitting really hard and aggressively. She returned absolutely amazingly, converting on 6/7 break points, if she is able to play the same way as she did in that match, but with a higher first serve percentage, then I think she could win in straights. However, I don’t feel like that will happen, and the serve is an area where Jabeur is lacking, despite playing amazing off the ground tennis. I suspect that she’ll win the match, but with many challenges and definitely being pushed to three sets as she tries to progress to the fourth round at the 2021 US Open.
Elise Mertens and Ons Jabeur have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a pretty interesting match-up, and it’ll be cool to see how they’ll try to play each other, I personally think all Jabeur has to do is keep doing what she’s been doing, and that’s play aggressive and hit hard. For Mertens to get the win, she would probably have to try and hit heavy, Jabeur is a short player, and if Mertens can get the ball up high, she can probably expect some short responses and be able to close in on them, but Jabeur is also pretty good on defense so that’s why I think even if she does that successfully, she won’t be able to get the win. We’re definitely in for an exciting contest here as the two players will have a close clash for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open.
