TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Reilly Opelka takes on Lorenzo Musetti in the Round of 64 on Thursday, September 2nd, 2021.
Will Reilly Opelka go through? Will Lorenzo Musetti pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most talented youngsters on the ATP Tour, taking on a higher ranked player who is in some great form. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open?
Reilly Opelka got a really good win to set up this meeting with Lorenzo Musetti, beating his opponent 7-6 (3) 6-4 6-4. With some excellent serving, he was able to get through quite easily, even managing to break his opponent twice to win the next two sets. He should feel quite confident heading into this match against Musetti, considering Musetti is not the best returner, and Opelka is playing so well right now, I expect him to get the win without any trouble on his serve, and even managing to win a set or two without the need for a tiebreak. While it won’t be easy, and when you have someone like Opelka they are not necessarily going to win, as tiebreaks could be a lottery in a way for them, but his results speak for themselves as does his ranking, I overall expect him to put on a solid performance to head through to the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open.
Lorenzo Musetti got a pretty good win to head through to the next round here, but he has a very hard challenge ahead of him in Reilly Opelka. While Musetti could be a better player on fast courts, he just isn’t. He prefers the clay, and that’s not the best thing at all when playing someone with a serve as enormous as Opelka’s is. He will have to try and take the ball early, Musetti is young and is someone who has a lot of room to change his game, and with his rather strong one handed backhand, I feel like he could enjoy more success if he takes the ball earlier and almost tries to adapt a lot of tactics from someone like Federer. Musetti is also someone who could play a bad game or two, and that’s the set, he won’t be able to break Opelka’s serve to get back into the set. I expect him to start out pretty strong, and manage to hold serve a lot, but I just feel like he isn’t consistent enough yet to take on someone like Opelka with a lot of hope, but let’s see if he has what it takes to push Opelka and have a chance to move on to the next round at the 2021 US Open.
Reilly Opelka and Lorenzo Musetti have met once before, with Reilly Opelka leading the head to head 1-0. Their one and only meeting was this year at the Rome Masters, with Opelka winning 6-4 6-4. Those are not some great numbers for Musetti, considering clay is his best surface by far and he still managed to get broken twice to lose in straight sets by one of the weakest returns on the ATP Tour. While I believe Musetti is trying to adapt his game to favor faster surfaces as well as a slower one, I don’t think it’s going to happen fast enough to be able to get many of Opelka’s serves into play to actually be competitive on that end. He will definitely need to focus on serving well, or else if he loses focus even just once or twice, it will most probably cost him the match. Let’s see if Opelka can keep up his incredible level and get a solid win to head on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open.
