TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Andrey Rublev in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, August 21st, 2021.
Which of these two great friends will come out on top of this All-Russian matchup? Will it be the slightly older and higher ranked, Daniil Medvedev, to get himself into another final of a Masters 1000 just one week after he won the Toronto Masters? Will it be Andrey Rublev to make his second Masters 1000 Final of his career in search for his biggest title? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one of these Russians will make their way to the Final of the 2021 Cincinnati Open. Who will it be?
Andrey Rublev came through a very entertaining match in the Quarter-Finals, beating the always unpredictable Benoit Paire in 3 sets 6-2/3-6/6-3. Benoit did not play well in the first and third set, but he shined in the second and he stole the set. Andrey Rublev showed great composure during the tight and unpredictable moments, and in the end he got the win under his belt. This is a great win for Rublev as he is now one win away from getting into his second Masters 1000 Final, with his first coming earlier this year at the Monte-Carlo Masters. However, Rublev will have to be at his absolute best as he now meets a great friend and rival in Daniil Medvedev here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Daniil Medvedev absolutely cruised through his Quarter-Final match, getting his revenge for his loss at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by beating Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets just around an hour 6-1/6-1. Daniil Medvedev showed amazing determination right from the start in that match and he did not let anything go at any moment, carrying the early momentum all throughout the match. Medvedev is just on another level at the moment, dominating all opponents, but he knows he has an even tougher battle on his hands here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open as he now meets his close friend Andrey Rublev.
Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev have met 5 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 5-0. Although Andrey has made strides in his game since their last win, Medvedev has also made strides. Adding to this, Medvedev has never lost a set to Rublev. Rublev struggled at moments against Benoit Paire, whilst Medvedev dominated against a tougher opponent in Pablo Carreno Busta. I expect both players to give it their best, but at the moment, Medvedev’s best is much higher than Rublevs. I expect another straight sets win for Medvedev over Rublev as he makes his way to the Final of the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
